Hailed by The New York Times as a "graceful, energetic ensemble," REPAST delves into its repertoire of the Baroque era to present an evening of music from Rembrandt's Amsterdam. Since then the ensemble has performed at Bargemusic, the Early Music Society of the Islands in Victoria, B.C., Museum Concerts of Rhode Island, the Times Center, Midtown Concerts, the New York Early Music Celebration, the Staller Center for the Arts, the Lyceum Concert Series, and the Brooklyn Friends Meeting House. Repast currently presents a concert series at Baruch Performing Arts Center.  Gabriel Kahane at the Broad Stage: 'Craigslistlieder'

School ensembles take center stage this week, with some very unusual programming:

Thursday night marks the debut of DEVOTED 'TIL DEATH from the Opera Theater program at Biola University's Conservatory of Music. The program focuses on the drama in opera with a selection of arias and excerpts from some of the most gloriously tragic operas ever written. The evening won't all be doom and gloom, however: comic relief will be offered with selections from 'Gianni Schicchi' and 'Falstaff', Puccini and Verdi's only comedies, respectively. This is the first of six performances. For complete details, click here: http://calendar.biola.edu/detail.cfm?e=739

Cellist and composer TOM FLAHERTY appears with his faculty colleagues for a short concert at Pomona College, one of their popular FRIDAYS AT NOON series. The program will include selections with the incomparable soprano GWENDOLYN LYTLE. More to come from Gwen later in February...
For more information on this concert, click http://www.music.pomona.edu/calendar.shtml

Friday night debuts an Italian opera so old it's new again: Opera UCLA will offer the West Coast premiere of GIASONE, the 17th-century smash hit from Francesco Cavalli. Although this work was one of the most popular operas of its time, it is very rarely performed in current repertoire. This is the first of four performances. For more information, including parking and ticketing, click:
http://www.music.ucla.edu/Events/

The excellent Baroque ensemble REPAST will be joined by soprano NELL SNAIDAS to offer a fascinating period program at the Getty on Saturday. The program is designed to complement the current Rembrandt exhibit at the museum. For information about Repast, click: http://www.repastbaroque.org
and for complete event information, click: http://www.getty.edu/visit/calendar/events/Performances.html

GABRIEL KAHANE brings his timely and promising new song cycle, 'Craigslistlieder' to the Broad Stage on Sunday. Kahane created these eight songs from actual posts found on Craigslist.com, and this concert is sure to make the site's Rants and Raves section. For Gabriel Kahane's website, click:

Hailed by The New York Times as a "graceful, energetic ensemble," REPAST delves into its repertoire of the Baroque era to present an evening of music from Rembrandt's Amsterdam. As a cosmopolitan port city and publishing center, this capital of the Netherlands in its golden age enjoyed a musical life that included both native productions and rich contributions from abroad.

Founded in New York City, REPAST was a finalist in the Early Music America/Naxos Recording Competition in 2003. Southern California Early Music aficionados remember AVI STEINS as the harpsichordist of the wonderful La Monica ensemble, now based in the Bay Area. Read about Repast by clicking:
http://www.repastbaroque.org

Repast is joined for this performance by violinist CLAIRE JOLIVET and soprano NELL SNAIDAS. One of the country's leading interpreters of Baroque and early classical repertoire, Ms. Jolivet has been praised in the New York Times for her "impeccable, thoughtfully shaped, dramatically taut" playing. Ms. Snaidas has been called "a model of luminous timbre and emotional intensity" by the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Read about the Repast artists and their guests by clicking:
http://www.repastbaroque.org/Repast/Biographies.html

This concert complements the exhibition Drawings by Rembrandt and His Pupils: Telling the Difference, on view at the Getty Center through Sunday, February 28, 2010. Read about the exhibition and see the online interactive to be guided in a close comparison of drawings by Rembrandt and ten of his students by clicking:
http://www.getty.edu/art/exhibitions/rembrandt_drawings/

Repast performs Saturday evening, when the Museum galleries are open until 9:00PM and parking is free after 5:00PM, creating a special opportunity to watch the sunset (5:23PM), dine, view fine art, and experience a transcendent musical performance that enriches the experience of the Museum’s exhibitions.

VLADIMIR USSACHEVSKY, a 1935 graduate of Pomona College, was one of the most significant pioneers in electronic music and one of its most ardent supporters. He was the first to combine traditional music sounds – musical instruments and voice – with taped sounds from a variety of sources – wind, footsteps, splashing water, a telephone, animal sounds or people crying or laughing, to name but a few. Ussachevsky electronically modulated these sounds through such devices and techniques as the electronic switch, echo chamber, feedback, ring modulation, tape loops, speed variation, volume control, complex mixing and detailed tape editing. The Rauschenberg works are from the Stone Moon Series, Samarkand Series, and Cardbird Series, and feature the first poster for Earth Day. The first concert will include a performance of Cage’s landmark silent piece, 4’33”, a perfect finale to the Zen intent of his music. Born in 1966 in Bremen, MARKUS PAWLIK began performing publicly at age seven and was the three-time winner of both the German National Young Musician's Competition and the Hamburg Steinway Competition. His development as a musician was influenced both by the German tradition through his studies with Karl-Heinz Kaemmerling at the Musikhochschule Hannover, and by the Russian school through his studies with Naum Grubert in Amsterdam, resulting in his facility to choose from a wide palette of different expressive styles while interpreting music from various genres.
