Jim,
Thanks again for these wonderful newsletters that I've been getting now for nearly two years. I was able to go with my daughter to the Guitar Ensemble Concert at Chapman Conservatory of Music last Sunday. It was the first time visiting the campus. We arrived early and walked around before the 8:00PM student recital in the Salmon Recital Hall (I didn't see any salmon!). Jeff Cogan did a great job preparing his group of young guitar performers. All the students performed well but Joseph Zamudio won the overall good performance award, and he was truly deserving of this recognition. What a delightful evening!

Dedicated to the late MARTHA MONTGOMERY, The Montgomery Arts House for Music and Architecture (MAHMA) was completed in late 2001. Designed by renowned architect ERIC LLOYD WRIGHT of the famous Wright family of architects, MAHMA was built on property purchased by Martha in 1946, which she later gave to her daughter, composer and violinist/violist MARIA NEWMAN. Maria, whose father was the nine-time Academy Award-winning composer and conductor ALFRED NEWMAN, had long desired to honor her mother in some significant way. MAHMA is very lovingly dedicated to the life and generosity of the late Martha Montgomery. Read about MAHMA, Maria Newman, and resident and guest artists by clicking:

Wholesale Orchestra founder and CalArts and Loyola Marymount-trained pianist TREVOR BERENS writes, "The Los Angeles Wholesale Orchestra (LAWO) is closing it's inaugural season with a concert featuring the music of Cornelius Cardew and Cat Lamb. Perhaps the most influential and important graphic piece ever written, Cardew's "Treatise" will open the program. Los Angeles composer Cat Lamb's "open-scape" (2008) will be performed by LAWO violinist, Orin Hildestadt. The second half will include "The Great Learning, Paragraph I", scored for organ, whistles, rocks, and speakers.

"As Cardew wrote much of his music for non-musicians and amateur musicians, as well as for professional musicians, LAWO invites the audience to perform "The Great Learning" with them. The concert will begin at 8:00PM, but if anybody is interested in performing "The Great Learning" with the Orchestra, please arrive one hour early at 7:00PM so we can explain the piece to you and have a brief rehearsal! Audience participation is strongly urged!"

Based on historical events, the 75-minute Solo Puppet Opera traces the lives of SIMON RODIA (1879-1965) – builder of the Watts Towers, reviled by bureaucrats as a hoarder of garbage, hailed by artists and scientists as a man of genius – and TRESSA PRISBREY (1896-1988), who in order to shelter her collection of 17,000 pencils, built houses of bottles in her backyard, each with a unique pattern of shapes and colors, all glowing with the sun. The inspired, lonely efforts of these brilliant folk artists propel a comic tale which slyly comments on our longings and aspirations, and the mixed receptions that they receive in the workaday worlds of the societies we live in. In celebration of the two artists' obsessive visions, all media – music, theater, puppetry, painting, sculpture, poetry, photography – are put to use in this equally driven, layered opera of ideas.

"I had it in mind to do something big." – Simon Rodia

"I went to get cement blocks, and my God, they were so expensive! So I went over to the dump and I thought, 'I'm going to make it out of bottles.'" – Tressa Prisbrey

PETER YATES is a composer and a guitarist. His work with the Elgart-Yates Guitar Duo, formed in 1975, includes recordings, duo-compositions, frequent performances in the U.S. and Europe, over one hundred premieres, and the publication of a book on prepared guitar. His compositions include two puppet operas, one about the builder of the Watts Towers, and the other about a ghost town in the Eastern Sierra. He is on the faculties of music at Cal Poly Pomona and UCLA.

The latest edition of REDCAT's ongoing series focuses on new work and works-in-progress in dance, theater, multi-media, and music by Los Angeles area artists. This edition of Studio will include the following six original works:

CYNTHIA LEE: I LONGED TO GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING...
Live tabla and cello accompany a trio of dancers in this movement and music investigation of sam in Hindustani rhythmic tradition: the moment where musical tension is released and begins again, where union and loss coalesce.

MIWA MATREYEK: DREAMING OF LUCID LIVING
Using projected animation to enliven objects, transform space, and illuminate live performance, this work is a hypnotically layered construction that seamlessly melds the fantastical with the real, and the seductiveness of cinema with the immediacy of the stage.

SARAH PAUL OCAMPO / ADVANCED BEGINNER: ROOMS
Leading a six-person orchestra playing everyday objects--comb, cheese grater, flyswatter, and more - Ocampo, on guitar, sings a four-song cycle that evokes a stifled domestic world of tattered hearts and longing.

PEGGY JO PABUSTAN / AMANDA ALFIERI: SERIOUS WORK
The collaborative team of Pabustan and Alfieri play with, and prey upon, a wealth of influences from the history of video and performance art in a work that is both traumatic and healing, feminist and exploitative, playful and very serious.

PAUL BAILEY ENSEMBLE: REQUIEM FOR A HIGH HOMICIDE ENCLAVE
Fusing a deconstruction of Henry Purcell's Funeral Music for Queen Mary (1694) with source material from the Los Angeles Times Homicide Report, including blog posts, comments and Google maps, The PAUL BAILEY ENSEMBLE performs an audio/visual eulogy for the homicide deaths in LA County in 2008. For information, click:
http://www.paulbaileyensemble.org/

WU INGRID TSANG: LAMENTO DELLA DRAG
Performing three vocal selections of mixed-genre repertoire alongside musician Giles Miller, Tsang's manifests an elaborate and extravagant Diva who sings traditional and baroque compositions, and intertwines the histories of opera and queer identity.

Tickets: $15 / $12 students / $8 CalArts students, faculty and staff.
