H. Southern California Vocal Events
  LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
  For the full calendar, click:
  http://www.laurislist.net/index.php?option=com_events

This is one huge week: just about every singer in town is up to something special, starting with the 800+ voices at the Shrine for LA PHIL's 'Symphony of a Thousand'. Mahler's 8th Symphony is very rarely performed for sheer logistical reasons, and GUSTAVO DUDAMEL takes on the challenge, leading a beefy troupe combined from the ranks of two orchestras, eight soloists and no fewer than sixteen different choirs. If you're not scheduled to be there Saturday night, there's plenty more to hear...

Operas abound, as LYRIC OPERA LA continues their run of the combined 'The Telephone' (Menotti) and 'The Human Voice' (Poulenc) in South Pasadena. But three other favorites also run multiple performances this week: CALIFORNIA BALLET OPERA performs 'La Traviata' in Indio, LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN OPERA ("LA Met") starts Strauss's 'Die Fledermaus' in Santa Monica, and REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY starts a short run of 'Don Pasquale' performances in Pomona. Friday brings a glimpse of PACIFIC OPERA PROJECT's upcoming season, at the Miles Auditorium in Santa Monica. LONG BEACH OPERA performs the dramatic and well-received 'Maria de Buenos Aires' from tango king Ástor Piazzolla, telling a tale of Argentina's 'Dirty War', and the women who survived it, at San Pedro's historic Warner Grand Theatre. For lighter fare, don't miss SUSAN DIETZ with her lunchtime recital in Manhattan Beach on Friday, featuring a program of Leonard Bernstein's songs and arias. Or, a birthday concert celebrating Mozart's genius, from the folks at TUESDAY MUSICALES and PASADENA OPERA. There's definitely something for everyone.

Choral music runs the gamut, with ALL SAINTS', BEVERLY HILLS offering an unusual Evensong service to celebrate Epiphany (a little belatedly) on Friday night. With works ranging from Elizabethan polyphony to the modern sounds of Tavener, the sounds will waft through the centuries. Further south, BACH COLLEGIUM OF SAN DIEGO performs a program of works by J.S. Bach at UCSD, and there are plenty more events on the calendar. (Take a moment to let your mouse do the walking, and don't forget the end of our "week": next Wednesday has some very juicy programs scheduled!)

COMING UP: LA OPERA's 'Simon Boccanegra' opens soon, and I'll be one of their designated social media mavens, sending updates via Twitter as I occupy one of their "Tweet Seats" at next Wednesday's dress rehearsal. (That's the 8th!) Follow @artsinthemedia and @laurislist so you don't miss a thing. Or, if you don't tweet regularly, you can still check out the action on the night of, or anytime thereafter, by clicking:
http://www.twitter.com/artsinthemedia

As we head into the meatiest part of the season, don't forget to pace yourself, and use the buddy system to support the arts: take a friend, and send another one to the concerts you can't attend. Then, drop me a line when you find something you love. I always look forward to hearing from you. As always, thank you for supporting live singing!

VLADIMIR USSACHEVSKY, a 1935 graduate of Pomona College, was one of the most significant pioneers in electronic music and one of its most ardent supporters. He was the first to combine traditional music sounds – musical instruments and voice – with taped sounds from a variety of sources – wind, footsteps, splashing water, a telephone, animal sounds or people crying or laughing, to name but a few. Ussachevsky electronically modulated these sounds through such devices and techniques as the electronic switch, echo chamber, feedback, ring modulation, tape loops, speed variation, volume control, complex mixing and detailed tape editing. The Strings Department at the USC Thornton School of Music has a new project this year, the Performance and Presentation Award. Students compete by first presenting a 15-minute oral introduction to the selection they will play, then the finalists compete by playing excerpts of their program. The winner this year is HAN BIN YOON, a second-year Master's student of RALPH KIRSHBAUM. Besides the Nixon Library recital, HAN BIN YOON will perform again at the Pasadena Conservatory on Saturday, February 18, 2012.

In May 2011, the cellist HAN BIN YOON was awarded First Prize in the USC Thornton School of Music's Concerto Competition, and in December 2011 he won the school's Inaugural Performance and Presentation Award. Han Bin will build upon such honors with a March 2012 performance of the Dvorák Cello Concerto with the USC Thornton Symphony, under the baton of JAMES CONLON, and a series of recitals, talks and teaching assignments that he will be performing throughout Southern California in the early months of 2012.

Born in 1988, Han Bin displayed signs of exceptional musical talent already in childhood. Within less than a year of picking up the cello, he won his first competition, and made solo appearances with the San Diego Youth Symphony.

As the winner of the 2010 Hellam Competition, Han Bin performed with the Springfield (MO) Symphony last season. He has previously appeared as guest soloist with orchestras including the Torrance, Palisades, Brentwood, and Huntsville Symphonies. He has performed with the Los Angeles Violoncello Society, and he was also chosen as one of two classical instrumental finalists in the Los Angeles Music Center's Spotlight Awards competition, subsequently performing in the gala concert at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, a program that was broadcast nationally on PBS. In the coming year, he will take part in the inaugural Piatigorsky International Cello Festival.

A devoted chamber musician, Han Bin has participated in such summer music festivals as the Sarasota Music Festival, the Yellow Barn Music School & Festival, and the Chamber Music Workshop at the Perlman Music Program. He has worked closely with prominent artists including Itzhak Perlman, Anthony Marwood, Donald Weilerstein, Paul Katz, Roger Tapping, Peter Frankl, Boris Berman, Susan Narucki, and members of the Cleveland, Juilliard, Orion and Tokyo String Quartets. In 2008, he garnered the Borromeo String Quartet Guest Artist Award, leading to his concertizing with the Borromeo Quartet in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence in Boston's Jordan Hall.

Han Bin Yoon is the recipient of the 2010 Korean Honor Scholarship for exceptional musical talent. During his four years at the New England Conservatory of Music (Bachelor of Music, 2010), he was awarded the Presidential Scholarship, the most prestigious scholarship bestowed by the NEC.

Han Bin Yoon has worked with such renowned cellists as BERNARD GREENHOUSE, ANNER BYLSMA, RONALD LEONARD, ELEONORE SCHOENFELD, and PAUL KATZ. He currently studies with RALPH KIRSHBAUM at the USC Thornton School of Music.

Pianist JIAYI SHI works extensively with the internationally renowned violinist MIDORI, and made her New York recital debut with Midori in March 2004. Ms. Shi also performs regularly with distinguished artists including MARTIN CHALIFOUR and RYU GOTO. Having earned a Bachelor's degree in Piano at the University of Texas, Ms. Shi continued her education at the Eastman School. She completed her Doctorate in Musical Arts at the Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Shi is currently on the piano faculty at Biola University in Southern California. Read about Jiayi Shi by clicking:

Olivier Messiaen: The Quartet for the End of Time
for violin, cello, clarinet, and piano

The New Yorker music critic ALEX ROSS writes, "The most ethereally beautiful music of the twentieth century was first heard on a brutally cold January night in 1941, at the Stalag VIIIA prisoner-of-war camp, in Görlitz, Germany. The
composer was Olivier Messiaen, the work 'Quartet for the End of Time'." Read the full article by clicking:

Robert Schumann: Kreisleriana for solo piano, Op.16
César Franck: Sonata for violin and piano
with distinguished guest artist MARTIN CHALIFOUR violin

NADIA SHPACHENKO writes, "We will perform the reflective and passionate Sonata for Violin and Piano by romantic composer César Franck. The first half of the program will present music inspired by literature, performed on a variety of unexpected instruments. It will feature two world premieres of pieces for voice, toy piano, percussion and toy percussion by my Cal Poly Pomona colleagues, wonderful composers DAVE KOPPLIN and PETER YATES, written specifically for the occasion. These two pieces will undoubtedly provoke excitement, wonder, fantasy and maybe a return to the childlike innocent state of mind in the audience, as they watch me sit on the little bench, singing, reciting poetry, and taking my toys very seriously! The first half will also feature the imaginative and powerful Kreisleriana for solo piano by romantic composer Robert Schumann (inspired by the writings of E. T. A Hoffman)."

Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites brings to the stage the poignant story of 16 Carmelite nuns martyred at the end of the Reign of Terror. This story is told through the experiences of the story's one fictional character, Blanch de la Force, a member of the threatened aristocracy, who enters a Carmelite convent to find escape from the world and learns what it truly means to take up one's cross. The famous final scene is one of the most riveting and chilling in all operatic repertoire as the nuns sing their way to the guillotine.

What do you hear when the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries collide? For the PIE folks, it's a kaleidoscopic concert of fleeting sonic images, epic journeys, and eerie doppelgangers. Performed on a rare 9-foot Fazioli piano renowned for its beautiful tone, these works promise to be astonishing, strange, and a little bit trippy.

Founded by pianist ARON KALLAY and composer ISAAC SCHANKLER, People Inside Electronics has been putting on concerts since 2009, with programs including world premieres, ambitious mega-works by both young and established composers, and human-machine hybrid improvisations, just to name a few things. They've worked with visual artists, dancers, writers, actors, scientists, and engineers too, and in 2010 teamed up with fellow concert series In Frequency to bring visionary composer ANNIE GOSFIELD from New York to LA for a full week of events. KPFK's Global Village called PIE "The Wizards of 'Ahs'!" (they're pretty sure that's a compliment).

CSUN Emeritus Professor of Music RON PURCELL passed away September 7, 2011. Ron joined the music faculty in 1971, was awarded Emeritus Status in 2001, and continued to teach guitar until 2006. Ron established a preeminent guitar program at California State University, Northridge, one of the first in the United States, which continues to be highly respected. In the early 1980's, Ron was able to persuade his teacher, ANDRES SEGOVIA, to perform a benefit recital at CSUN, which established the endowed Segovia Guitar Scholarship. In his role as President of the American Guitar Society for decades, Ron brought many international guitarists to perform at CSUN. Ron established and provided the leadership for the International Guitar Research Archives. Now housed in the Oviatt Library, IGRA represents one of the finest and most complete historical collections of guitar repertoire in the world today. After his retirement from the faculty in 2006, Ron continued to work in the Oviatt Library to catalog and digitize this collection to ensure it was available to scholars worldwide. - Robert Bucker
